Bread Usli- Seasoned Bread

This recipe is popular in the Southern regions of Karnataka and Mumbai. Typically, this recipe was invented to salvage the bread from wasteage- they used the crusts and pieces of bread in the packet to make this recipe. People loved the dish so much that they make it with regular bread now. Tt is eaten as a light afternoon snack along with tea.

Preparation time: 3 mins
Cooking time: 8 mins

3 whole grain white bread slices( we used "Wonder White")
1/4 cup onions chopped finely lengthwise
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urad dal
1 tsp channa dal
2 medium green chilies
1 sprig curry leaf
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 packet splenda
2 tbsp olive oil
6 tbsp water

Break the bread slices into small pieces and keep aside. In the meantime heat a pan with oil. When the pan gets hot add the mustard, channa dal, urad dal and curry leaves. Keep frying. Eventually the mustard will begin to pop and the dals will change to light brown. At this stage, add the onions and green chilies. Saute till onions are translucent. Add the bread slices. Add 6 tbsp of water and mix well. Cook for 2-3 mins. Add a packet of splenda and cook for 1 more minute. Eat it hot or cold with tea.

Note: Use whole grain white or white wheat enriched bread only.

Enjoy!
