Alambe Songa- Mushroom Masala

This is a classic dish from the Southern parts of India. Alambe=mushroom and Songa = semi dry curry. Our mom and grandma always prepared it with potatoes and onions instead of mushrooms; maybe that's because mushrooms are seasonal in India(this was a few years ago). You can call this it whatever you want- mushroom masala, mushroom curry. Once you taste this you will be asking for more. The dish tastes great when made a little spicy(people who can't handle hot food-BEWARE). The combination of tangy flavors from the tamarind and the fire from the chillies makes it just scrumptious.

8oz mushrooms(cut lengthwise or into small bite size pieces)
1 medium sized onion(chopped finely)
3 garlic cloves(finely chopped)
1 tsp red chilli powder(or according to taste)
1/2 tsp tamarind powder
4 tbsp olive oil(or any)
salt to taste

Heat oil in a pan. Add onions and saute them till brown. Then add the chilly powder and fry for 2 mins till the aroma from the chilly starts to spread out. Now,add the mushrooms and garlic. Sprinkle some water; Cover and cook on medium heat for 10 mins. Add some salt, and cook till done.

Enjoy!
